Strong Stone Mountain Chapter Moms' November Health Topic

November is diabetes awareness month.

Here is a brief overview of type 2 diabetes.

SYMPTOMS

Often times the symptoms can be so mild that they can go unnoticed. Common symptoms of type 2 diabetes:

*urinating often

*feeling very thirsty

*feeling very hungry

*extreme fatigue

*blurry vision

*cuts/bruises that are slow to heal

*tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet

DIAGNOSIS

One of the easiest ways to now diagnose diabetes is with a A1c blood test. The A1c test measures your average blood glucose for the past 2 to 3 months. The advantages of being diagnosed this way are that you don't have to fast or drink anything prior to the test.

PREVENTION

Research shows you can lower your risk for type 2 diabetes by 58% by:

*losing 7% of your body weight

*exercising moderately thirty minutes a day, five days a week

In Memoriam

The Stone Mountain Chapter is saddened by the loss of one of our charter members, Ruth Saunders. Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, and our chapter.

Here is a picture of her celebrating the chapter's 20th anniversary with her husband, George, daughter, Michelle, and son in law, Steven.

You will be missed, Mom Ruth!
